Billiards Room
Billiards room at Tornashean
Built from attractive pink granite, and approached along its own private lane, it exudes elegance and charm. The delightfully spacious dining-room, complete with 16ft dining table, oak floor and open fire, is the perfect setting for a family feast, while the log fires in the living room and snug create a cosy ambience in which to relax and enjoy a nightcap. There is even a billiards room with full-size table, to keep the whole family entertained. An outside kennel (insulated and ventilated) will accommodate 2-3 large dogs with secure external run; although pets are not permitted in the main house. Well-maintained gardens and unspoilt grounds of up to 60acres with a river running through complete the picture, making this superior property an ideal choice for a comfortable, romantic stay in the heart of highland country.

Situated in the village of Strathdon, home to the famous Lonach Highlanders, Tornashean is perfectly placed for exploring this land of rich heritage and spectacular landscapes. There are numerous castles to visit in the vicinity, relics of a bygone era - particularly impressive is the 15th-century fairytale castle of Craigievar. Royal Deeside, home to Balmoral, is just half an hour's drive away, as is the regal spa town of Ballater. Having provided the royal household with basic provisions, the local shops at Ballater display crests above their doorways, and the elegant station, which once greeted Queen Victoria on her first visit to Deeside, now functions as a tearoom.

Nine miles south-west of the town, Loch Muik provides the starting point for numerous hikes, including a route over the mountains to Glen Doll, and a more taxing day-long trek up and around the mighty Lochnagar (3789ft), much painted and written about by Prince Charles. Cycling, canoeing and skiing are all available to enjoy in the area around Ballater. Outdoor enthusiasts will be spoilt for choice, with trout and salmon fishing, shooting and stalking, hiking and bird-watching all available locally. Shops and pubs lie just a short walk away in the village centre.
